PCC’s Anarchists and Socialists Unite on May Day

On May 1st, following a long tradition of protests for labor rights, the student ANT club and students involved with the Seattle based Socialist Alternative organized a walkout on the Cascade Campus. There were around fifty total attendees, from students to staff, some were there for specific reasons, or as one member of the ANT club put it, “I’m mad!”

“He wanted to raise awareness of the failures found in the Trump administration, in recognition of his 100th day in office.”

Signs were provided by Socialist Alternative.

Jesse Dryer from Socialist Alternative had been on campus every day for weeks leading up to the walk out trying to spread word and encourage attendance. He wanted to raise awareness of the failures found in the Trump administration, in recognition of his 100th day in office.

Dryer introduced a series of scheduled speakers using the proper megaphone, which has become standard for these kinds of events. The speakers were: Rosemary Dodd of Socialist Alternative, Sheena Sisk of Portland Tenants United and a former PCC Cascade student, and Dan a member of the Ant club. They all shared similar frustrations–the rent is too high, the money is going to top 1%–etc…

Dryer again took the megaphone at the end of the speaking to remind everyone that there was one more event planned before they marched towards the MAX “dance party?” The small, but proud, little crowd roared with laughter, and despite the fact there were technical difficulties with the speakers, they danced away.

In the end they marched to the MAX to meet up with a larger group of organized protestors, at a park nearby.
